ANIMAL RIGHTS Part 2: Dolphins and Pigs

(All photos found on Google images)

Dolphins:   The horses of the sea. Divers say they feel safer when dolphins are around. Dolphins have been known to save people. (We miss you Flipper!) Dolphins are intelligent, lively, and free spirited. We go to places like Marine World to see them perform amazing tricks. They swim fast. They jump high. They are also like elephants in that they form strong connective bonds with their pod mates – a family. They stay close to the members of their pod and look out for each other.

In Japan there’s a place most Americans are now aware of called “Death Cove”. Dolphins out at sea are herded into these coves by large ships. The people on board take pots and pans and bang them on the sides of the ships. This messes with the dolphins’ sonar and they become frightened and agitated. (They say it’s like being hit over the head and electrocuted at the same time). The dolphins flee from the boats into the cove where a net is then stretched out behind them so they can’t escape back into the ocean. Men in canoes then separate the good-looking dolphins, which are then sold for profit at local run-down aquariums. They then swarm around the remaining dolphins and proceed to stab them with harpoon spears. The injured dolphins are then drug to shore where their throats are slit and they are left to slowly bleed out and die. While dying, they hear the sounds of their fellow pod mates crying out. They are powerless. Defenseless. They are then sold at market as packaged meat. Serial killers inflict less pain than this on their victims. [When people Don’t respect animals, animals Always suffer]
Pigs:     Maybe you saw the movie Babe and thought pigs were cute. Maybe you didn’t. Either way you still probably eat bacon or pork. Why care? It seems like the only people who don’t eat pork (besides vegantarians on principle) are those who raise them to take to fair to sell for meat. People who work closely with pigs know: They are intelligent creatures with distinct personalities. If your dog passed away and someone brought another dog to you that looked just like the one you had, would it be like the same dog to you? Most people would say no. Dogs can be told apart even if they look similar because they have individual personalities and habits. Pigs are the same way. In fact pigs are said to be smarter than some dogs. There have been cases where pet pigs have saved their owners lives – the same way a dog would. One elderly woman passed out in her kitchen while her house caught fire. Her pig pulled her by her shirt collar outside away from the burning house. Some people think pigs are dirty. Actually most pigs don’t like mud- but they lack the ability to sweat. If they don’t roll in mud to cool themselves from the heat, they will get overheated and die.
In the U.S. pigs are rarely mentioned. They are seen as a means to an end- Animals put on Earth so that man can eat. But in reality, man doesn’t need meat. Because cavemen didn’t exactly have Safeway back in the day, they weren’t guaranteed meat on a weekly basis. Their bodies therefore developed the ability to produce most of the protein they needed to survive. Our bodies still do this today. We need some protein, but too much can be harmful to our health. Most of this protein can be gotten from various nuts, beans, eggs, and other sources. (If people couldn’t survive without meat there’d be no vegans saying we could).

Pigs are sent to slaughter with little to no consideration. There’s no respect for their lives. Worse, most pigs can sense when they’re about to die. They’re not stupid. They figure it out. How horrible is it to know someone is about to kill you but there is Nothing you can do to save your own life? Pigs live this horror.
If you still think pigs are nothing more than senseless objects think about this: If a pig was put in a pen with a wolf, what would it do? Would the pig just stand there apathetically as if it didn’t care whether it lived or died? Or would the pig run and scream and maybe even try to defend itself? If the pig didn’t value its own life why would it try to save it? Pigs don’t want to die. They value their life. Some killers don’t value the lives of others and can take them with little to no thought. How is the slaughter of pigs different? [When people Don’t respect animals, animals Always suffer]
