This Religion Brought To You By...

Why do Mormons and Scientologist post commercials for their religion on Hulu?

I’m innocently trying to watch the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a commercial comes on. It’s a guy who says he survived the 9/11 attack and was working in the World Trade Center when it collapsed. He’s talking and it keeps flashing over to photographs he has on the mantle in his home of his wife and their kids. Then at the end of the commercial he looks at the camera and says, “My name is XYZ and I’m a Mormon”.

What the hell does anything that happened in that commercial have to do with you being a Mormon? Unless you’re saying you survived 9/11 because God protects Mormons, and or you are saying that you have a great wife and a great marriage because you are Mormon, then what was the point in that? It’s like a gay guy saying all of that and then at the end stating, “Hi I’m Gary, and I’m a gay man” -as if surviving 9/11 has anything to do with his sexual-orientation.

The problem I have with Mormonism at this point is that I know very little about it. And stupid commercials like that don’t help. I hear rumors and mockery and claims, but where the heck do you learn what it is to be Mormon? With Jews, Christians, and Muslims it’s easy: read the Bible or the Koran. Hindus and Buddhists don’t make it very easy either, but since they’ve been around for a while you can easily find a lot of information on those religions from books and religious courses.

I also saw another commercial. It showed pictures of all sorts of people in all sorts of social situations. It gave statistics. Apparently there are over 1 million Scientologists out there. It said if you wanted to know more about Scientology you could go to their website. I don’t remember if I did or not.

I think if I wanted to lead people to Christianity via commercial I’d show those in the past who were truly dedicated to God and that religion and what they accomplished through it. Namely Aquarians and Aries who were Christians. Thos two are spiritual leaders –both spiritual and great at genuinely helping and leading people. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., JFK –even though he was Catholic he still counts, Cesar Chavez. Then I would show a Christian talking very honestly and strait-forwardly about Christ and how He has impacted his life.

Religion is meant to help people find their purpose in life and how to fulfill it as well as get in touch with their soul and let it be guided where it needs to go. It’s not something a 30 second commercial can portray –especially when the commercial seems more like an online dating clip. The best way to find out about a religion is from a source you know and trust -like a friend.

  1. Mormons are trying their best to destroy the idea that they are cult-weirdos. So they are making commercial showing that they are "normal" like everyone else...having the same tragedies and joys as everyone else does.

Easy to find out about Mormons...a Mormon will gladly come to your house and study with you.

Of course, I'd never let that happen without me being there. =) The Mormon religion is simply and older version of Zeitgeist, with their old made up history and strange ideas. Heck, even Zeitgeist seems tame compared to the full catalogue of Mormon ideas.

Scientologist have the same cult stigma, and are trying to overcome it in similar ways.
