The Gospel of John 4:1-26

Jesus Goes to Galilee

4:1 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were),
3 He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.
4 And He had to pass through Samaria.
5 So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph;
6 and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to er, "Give Me a drink".
8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10 Jess answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink', you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
11 She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?
12 "You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and h sons and his cattle?"
13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drink of this water will thirst again;
14 but whoever drinks of the water I will give him shall never thirst; but the water I will give him become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
15 The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw."
16 He said to her, "Go, call your husband to come here."
17 The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have correctly said, 'I have no husband';
18 fr you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly."
19 The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20 "Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."
21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
22 "You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23 "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
25 The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us."
26 Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He."
-John 4:1-26

I'll call this Part 1 of Chapter 4. It's weird that I feel the need to break down these chapters because technically they're not that long -but they cover a lot of points in a short span of space.

So for clarification purposes: Samaria was a place of "Jews" that were a little more unorthodox and lax than the Pharisees preferred.They treated the Samaritans like Catholics and the Pope would treat Scientologists. They didn't take the Samaritans seriously and actually went out of their way to avoid them as if they were unworthy people.

On top of the fact that Jews from Jerusalem didn't associate with Samaritans, men in general also didn't talk with women that they came across in public. It was "inappropriate". If ever you want to pick up a vibe for what things were kind of like back then culturally -look to the Middle East. They are the most modern archaic culture we can see alive today.

Anyways, Jesus was thirsty so of course when you are Jesus and you feel like drinking from a well -which well are you going to go to? That's right, the Biblical well Jacob gave to his son Joseph and his disciples. It's kind of like, if Jesus was bored and decided He wanted to read something He'd just head on over to a mountain and pick up some stone tablets Moses left up there.

So Jesus was sitting at a well when a woman came for a drink. Jess asked her to give him a drink and 1. She thought it was strange a man was talking to her and 2. She thought it was weird that a Jew was talking to her. She then asked Him why He had asked her for a drink. He then said that if she knew who he was, she'd be asking Him for an eternal drink of salvation. And of course, as usual, she took Him literally instead of figuratively. Poor Jesus. It must have been like hanging out with Amelia Bedelia all day -only without the lemon meringue pie.

The woman then says, "Who do you think You are? This is Jacob's well. His sons and his cattle drank here." Oh Jesus. That must have hurt. She just out-ranked Jacob's cattle to you. Ouch.

Jesus then tells her He has water of eternal life. She then asks for some. He then tells her to bring her husband over. She says she doesn't have one. Jesus then tells her she doesn't have one because she's had five and is now sleeping with a guy she is not married to. The woman then says, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet." Moments like these reveal the fact that Jesus had more patience than anyone on Earth -He had His patience, God's patience, and the Spirit's patience- and yet you still wonder how He managed to keep His cool over the years with instances like this.

Then Jesus tells the woman that very soon no Jew will worship the Father. He says she and many others worship that which they do not know. It seems strange that so many people who dedicated their life to worshiping God could not have known Him. But I think it was because over time -and because of added laws and rituals -people had focused more energy and thought into How they worshiped and forgot Who and Why they were worshipping. Their religion became an Obligation rather than Salvation.

"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Spirit meaning soul and spirituality and Truth meaning Wisdom from Guided Word. You would assume the Jews would have had the Truth part down at least, but instead they mostly had Hypocrisies.

Then the woman says she is waiting for the Messiah to come and when He does she will listen to Him. Then in a Star Wars -"I am your father" -moment Jesus reveals He is the One.

Epic. No other words. Just epic.

  1. "It's weird that I feel the need to break down these chapters because technically they're not that long -but they cover a lot of points in a short span of space."

    ---Yeah, once I realized this about the Bible, it became more real to me. Every sentence can be analyzed.

    "Samaria was a place of "Jews" that were a little more unorthodox and lax than the Pharisees preferred.They treated the Samaritans like Catholics and the Pope would treat Scientologists. They didn't take the Samaritans seriously and actually went out of their way to avoid them as if they were unworthy people. "

    --- It was a bit more. Israel got invaded by other countries and usually they held firm, of if they lost they would still keep their identity. Samaria, however, once gave in to their invaders and interbred with them. So in effect they became "half-Jews". Half of their bloodline was the enemy. This is why they were despised.

    "It's kind of like, if Jesus was bored and decided He wanted to read something He'd just head on over to a mountain and pick up some stone tablets Moses left up there. "

    ---lol

    " Poor Jesus. It must have been like hanging out with Amelia Bedelia all day -only without the lemon meringue pie."

    ---Had to Wikipedia that reference...still don't know what it means, but it's funny.

    "and yet you still wonder how He managed to keep His cool over the years with instances like this."

    ---Sometimes he didn't...you'll see.

    "Their religion became an Obligation rather than Salvation." --- Right on.

    "Epic. No other words. Just epic." --- <3
