The Gospel of John 2:1-25

Well... it hath been a while since I wrote about updated readings. Dang it. I last left off writing about John 1:51. I'm on John 6 now. Dang it.

Miracle at Cana

2:1 "On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;
2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
3 When the wine ran out the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."
4 And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come."
5 His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says, to you, do it."
6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.
7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim.
8 And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him.
9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,
10 and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now."
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
15 And He made a scourge of cords and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables;
16 and to those who were selling doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business."
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME".
18 The Jews the said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?"
19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
20 The Jews then said, "It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"
21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.
24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men,
25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man." -John 2:1-25

Well, many things going on here. Firstly, when they were at the Cana wedding, there was this tradition in the culture where You serve the Good Wine first -then when people have gotten "their fill" from that, you serve the watered down -less robust wine.

They ran out of wine and Jesus's mom basically turned to Him and said, "Make wine for these people." This indicates two things: 1.She knew He had the power to turn water into wine before everyone else did (Since this was His fist official time doing it in front of others) which implies He had shown this power to her before and 2. Jesus's mom still treated Him kind of like a boy which I find funny and amusing.

Then Jesus said, "Why are you asking me to serve wine? My Hour Has not Yet Come." Two things here: 1. Why would you ask God-in-the-flesh to serve wine for people? and 2. Whenever Jesus says it isn't "His Time Yet", He means it isn't the final days before the Crucifixion and certain acts or signs do not need to be shown yet.

Then Jesus's mom ignores Him as any mother woud do a son, and tells the waiters to get the waterpots. Then Jesus turns the water into wine and the Headwaiter asks the bridegroom why he didn't serve the good wine first.

Then it's Passover time. Passover time in Jerusalem is like Marti Gras in New Orleans. It's not the same if you celebrate the holiday outside of the designated area. For instance 4th of July in Australia isn't the same as it is in the U.S. During Passover time, Jerusalem is the city to be in.

So Jesus goes to the temple of Jerusalem -the main temple -and sees a bunch of temple leaders counting money and selling oxen/sheep/doves. The reason they are selling this is because in Jewish culture at the time you were suppose o sacrifice your best animal -your prize sheep or lamb- in order to pay penance for your sins and ask forgiveness of God for wrong-doings. The temple decided it would be really convenient to then sell livestock there that people could buy and then the temple leaders could pocket the money. Kind of like drive-thru sin/forgiveness service.

Jesus was upset that money was being exchanged for sin forgiveness in a sacred temple allegedly honoring God's will. So He kicked people out and overturned some tables.

"ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME" -In this case the lack of Zeal or Passion the temple leaders had for the Scriptures and Proper Acts of religious followers consumed Jesus with anger.

Then the temple leaders asked Jesus where He got His authority from.

Jesus said: "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
Jesus was referring to his own Resurrection. There was no way the temple leaders could have known that so at the time they must have though Jesus was crazy and didn't know what He was talking about. Hindsight and Foresight...

Then Jesus went to the Passover feast and many there Believed He was who he said He was. But Jesus didn't take their "faith in Him" to heart knowing that man's beliefs are often based more on convenience than conviction.
