  1. Dude was awesome. Studying his time...amazing that he had the guts to do these "pagan" paintings in a very Catholic time. That's why he ended up burning lots of his stuff later on, when he got caught up in religious extremism --- luckily we still have these things remaining.

  2. Venice was deviant from the beginning. Italy was drawing from ancient Roman artowrk for inspiration and that came with a lot of Roman theological themes and myths. Venus/ Aphrodite in particular was interesting because people associated Venice with the goddess that emerged from the sea on a shell -being a port city was sort of similar. But they also associated themselves with The Virgin Mary. It was an interesting mix between Goddess of Love and Mother of Jesus.

  3. I think you mean Florence, not Venice? Or did he work there too? Based on my very meager study thus far, the Medici family that sponsored him was pure Florentine.

  4. Medici were in Fireze, Italy -Florence. I was just talking about Venice and their artistic tendency to draw Venus.
